| Monterey County Board of Supervisors Holds Workshop on Hydraulic Fracturing Officials in Monterey County convened a workshop on September 23, 2014, to discuss the state’s proposed regulations related to hydraulic fracturing and a proposed two-year moratorium to ban drilling activity within the county. During the meeting, officials with the California Department of Conservation presented information on hydraulic fracturing processes and provided a timeline for proposed regulatory action. Citizens at the meeting spoke in support of a hydraulic fracturing moratorium citing concerns over air quality and water supply safety, according to the Monterey Herald News. Though it has occurred in the past, county officials confirmed there is currently no hydraulic fracturing activity in Monterey County. The county is expected to develop proposed regulations in the next two or three months. |

Environmental Groups Sue Sacramento Air Quality Officials over Crude Oil Trains
Earthjustice, an environmental group, has filed a lawsuit against the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District for allowing InterState Oil Company to transfer crude from trains to tanker trucks without filing an environmental review. According to the Merced Sun-Star, InterState’s current permit allows them to unload 100 train cars every two weeks, and air district officials stated the activity did not warrant an environmental review because the activity did not result in an emissions increase.
