Environmental Policy, Legislative Issues Could Impact Energy Workforce Members

The Environmental Policy Committee is leading the industry response in several upcoming legislative- and policy-related issues that will influence domestic energy production. Several issues include:

  • NORM and TENORM Waste Management: When NORM (Normally Occurring Radioactive Material) is disturbed or altered from natural settings, or present in a technologically enhanced state due to past or present human activities and practices, the material is known as TENORM. The committee is creating best practices regarding how waste materials must be handled, stored and disposed of in compliance with regulations that ensure the safety of workers and the public.
  • Colorado PFAS: Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that includes PFOA, PFOS, GenX and many other chemicals that all contain fluorine. Colorado passed legislation in 2021 regarding PFAS and its potential to impact water supplies in order to make baseless allegations against the oil and gas industry. The committee is working to ensure the science being reported is accurate and domestic energy production is not burdened with undue litigation battles.
  • Submitting Comments on the Gulf of Mexico Permit Process: The EPA is expected to publish the Draft Region 6 (or 4) permit in the Federal Register soon. The Environmental Policy Committee will provide public comments during the permit review process.
  • Texas Rule 8 Expansion: Currently, Rule 8 prohibits a person from using an unpermitted carrier or receiver to transport, store, handle, treat or dispose of oil and gas wastes if the carrier or receiver is required to have a permit. The Environmental Policy Committee is working with Member Companies and regulators on these updates.

The Environmental Policy Committee focuses on environmental and process safety issues that have impacts throughout the entire energy production value chain. It oversees Energy Workforce’s engagement in regulatory and legislative issues regarding environmental policies and operations, and helps companies in the energy services sector by creating and sharing occupational best practices.
