Executive Leadership Program Participants Network, Discuss Essential Skills

The Emerging Executives Committee hosted a networking session for the Council’s Executive Leadership Program participants on October 12.

Representatives from Caterpillar Inc., Compass Compression Solutions, Deloitte, Expro, Exterran, GD Energy Products, Hunting, Milestone Environmental Services, MRC Global, NOV Inc., Oil States International, Pacific Tubulars, Schlumberger, Shawcor, Solaris Oilfield Infrastructure, Stream-Flo Industries, TechnipFMC and Vallourec participated in the event.

The virtual meeting allowed participants to break into small group discussions where they considered topics such as what they enjoy about their jobs and careers, how their roles and organizations have changed since the advent of COVID-19 and the skills they consider essential for everyone.

“I enjoy developing people. I’ve lived overseas in Singapore, Dubai and the UK, so I’ve had a quite a bit of experience with people of different backgrounds and cultures, and I really enjoy the mentoring aspect of my job.”

When discussing organizational challenges, one participant said he struggles with managing people who bring complaints without solutions.

“If you don’t know a solution, that’s one thing. But if you haven’t thought about what solutions are out there, or how to fix the problem, that’s a different issue,” he said.

Another participant agreed with that line of thought.

“One of the things I’m challenged with on a regular basis is that people automatically assume that it’s someone else’s job to fix the problem. There’s no ownership, but I’m learning how to build a culture of ownership through this program.”

“A lot of the bureaucracy can wear you down. With task-oriented people, it can be difficult to get everyone to align with a vision instead of just completing a job,” said another participant. “I’ve been working on how to enact change and improve things when it seems difficult to turn a big ship.”

Participants in the small group discussions shared key takeaways with the entire group at the end of the session.
