North Dakota: Bill would give elected leaders final say on oil penalties

North Dakota State Senator Tyler Axness recently introduced SB 2342 to require elected officials to sign off before fines against oil and gas companies are reduced. Under current law, the director of the Department of Mineral resources is the final signatory on penalty settlements. The proposed bill would require a roll call vote by the state’s Industrial Commission (comprised of the governor, attorney general and agricultural commissioner) in order to accept or reject a settlement.
