In early December, an Ohio Senate committee began hearings on a bill approved by the Ohio House of Representatives that would appoint the Ohio Department of Natural Resources the primary repository for oil and gas companies’ disclosures about chemicals used in drilling operations. Under current rule, companies must report this information to the State Emergency Response Commission and local emergency planning entities. According to the Midwest Energy News, critics of the bill say it violates federal law requiring companies to report hazardous chemical information to local planning authorities.
