PESA Hosts Second Webinar on OSHA Silica Rule

On January 16, PESA hosted its second educational webinar on the Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s (OSHA) Respirable Crystalline Silica Standard, bringing together experts from across the industry to discuss the silica standard with discussion on best practices for compliance.

Representatives from PESA Companies AIRIS Wellsite ServicesAtlas Sand, Baker Hughes, a GE Company, Black Mountain Sand, DistributionNOW, Halliburton, Hoover Ferguson, M-I SWACO, a Schlumberger Company, Schlumberger and TETRA Technologies, Inc. participated.

Leading the discussion was Joseph Kraham, Director of Industrial Hygiene, AIRIS Wellsite Services.

The presentation provided participants with an overview of the regulation, as well as in-depth looks at certain key sections, including general industry perceptions of the issue, the rule and its enforcement, and how they can differ from reality. Participants were also shown data detailing exposure trends over time and the relation to the failure of some employers to enforce adequate safety standards.

Following the conclusion of the presentation, the webinar transitioned to an open discussion about the rule itself and how different participant’s companies choose ensure compliance.

PESA’s first webinar on this topic in April 2018 provided participants with a general overview of the rule, as well as a platform to discuss industry expectations. The rule went into effect on June 23, 2018.

OSHA, the Department of Labor agency tasked with assuring safe working conditions, released its final report on the new regulation in 2016 giving companies two years to devise and put in place a plan for compliance. The standard seeks to significantly reduce workplace exposure to crystalline silica, a harmful carcinogen found in sand and stone that currently effects an estimated 2.3 million workers worldwide.
