STEM Students Learn at Exploring Energy Conference

0More than 1,300 high school students from the IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academies gathered recently for an Exploring Energy conference, learning about the oil and gas value chain, as well as STEM careers.

The IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center funds the Petroleum Academies, providing high school students with an advanced, multidisciplinary learning experience in science, mathematics and the emerging technology concepts needed to pursue professional training and degrees in engineering, geology, geophysics and global energy management.

Presenters, demonstrators and volunteers included representatives from BP, Core Labs, DistributionNOW, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Houston Geological Society, Lowry Rhoads Associates, Marathon Oil, NAPE, Noble Energy, Occidental Petroleum, Schlumberger, Shell, Walter Oil & Gas and Weir Oil & Gas.

Senior students who participated in an industry externship during the summer of 2019 spoke to the younger students about their job shadowing experiences followed by a tour of the University of Houston campus.

The Exploring Energy conference was coordinated by the IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center, and sponsored by IPAA, PESA, University of Houston, EOG Resources, Halliburton, Marathon Oil, Walter Oil & Gas, Weir Oil & Gas, Lowry Rhoads Associates, ExxonMobil, Southwestern Energy and Total.
