High Performer David Martin, HSE Counsel at Halliburton
What influenced your decision to enter the oil and gas industry?
I entered the oil and gas industry because I had the opportunity to represent Halliburton as outside counsel when I was practicing law in Alaska. I enjoyed the work and the people that I worked with so much that when the opportunity to apply for a job with Halliburton presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity.
What was your impression of the industry beforehand, and how has it evolved?
I have always thought that the industry was an important part of our economy and our society, but I never thought about the technology and work that goes into producing the benefits that all of us enjoy. Now that I am involved in the oil and gas industry, I realize that it is full of smart, hardworking people that are committed to improving the industry and the communities where we work.
What have you found to be the most surprising about the industry?
I was very surprised to learn how many jobs are created by the oil and gas industry. It is easy to think about the jobs provided by the operators and large service companies, but there are so many more companies – especially PESA members – that provide good jobs and have a positive impact on local communities.
What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about the industry or your work?
Because we are a global company, I am working with colleagues around the world on a wide range of matters. It is always challenging to work in jurisdictions that have different regulations and laws, not to mention different languages. But it has also been very rewarding to learn about these jurisdictions and provide support to internal clients around the world.
Where do you hope to see the industry develop over the next 5 years?
I hope that we will be on the other side of this downturn and in a position to grow as the industry recovers. I also hope to see the industry continue to grow and train new talent to be the leaders of the future.
What role do you believe you will play in the industry’s future?
I believe that Halliburton will continue to be a leader in the development of technology. From our Frac of the Future™ to CYPHER®, our seismic-to-stimulation process, we will continue to adapt and grow with an ever-changing market. I hope that I can continue to help my clients advance and use that technology around the world.
How has your involvement in PESA supported your career goals?
I have been very fortunate to be involved with PESA since essentially my first day on the job. As a member of the emerging leaders committee, I have been able to meet and network with other people from the industry. Each member has helped expand my knowledge of the industry and the amazing technology and tools that are available. Through PESA, I’ve also had the opportunity to develop my skills as a leader and improve on my public speaking.
Tell me about some of the people you’ve met while working in the industry. How have they impacted your thinking?
Two important people that I have met while working in the industry are Bob Moran and Galen Cobb with Halliburton. Both have shown me how important it is to continue to challenge myself and take on new projects. They also played an important part in helping me get involved with PESA and have shown me how important it is to be engaged and involved with our trade association.
I’ve also been fortunate to work with Leslie Beyer on a number of projects with PESA. Through our work together, she has been a great example of how to work with a wide range of stakeholders and find consensus on difficult issues. She’s a role model and exemplifies leadership, both with the trade association and with her employees.
What are you most excited about for your career, your company, and your industry?
While we are in tough times now, I am excited for what the future holds for the industry. I think we are going to continue to develop new technology that will allow us to access resources in an efficient fashion. I am also excited about all of the opportunities that are available to me working at a global company like Halliburton. I have the opportunity to work on a wide range of issues in locations around the world.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about entering the oil and gas industry?
I would encourage anyone interested in oil and gas to jump in and find a job. While the downturns are a difficult part of the industry, it leads to efficiencies and creative solutions. The industry is full of smart and talented people and if you are up for the challenge, it is an incredibly rewarding industry.
