Best Practice Sharing Highlights Ways Members Can Influence Culture

Energy Workforce’s industry-leading Inclusion & Diversity Business Champion Program brought participants together for a structured best practice sharing session on how to make an impact on company culture.

Participants broke into small groups to discuss ensuring DEI initiatives receive support enterprise-wide, ways to promote belonging within the organization and how to develop, promote or support the organization’s DEI strategy.

“Our group talked about the culture of an organization and how we could make a difference. One of the first things we identified is that this takes a long time. It’s a journey and we’re not going to be there right away. We will get there through training and having an executive sponsor to lead the strategy.”

Several groups discussed the importance of culture moments before the start of meetings.

“Someone in our group shared something very impactful, which was having culture moments at the start of every meeting. Most of us have our safety moments, or we may have other things that we talk about prior to the beginning of a meeting but having that culture moment, I think it was an eye opener to me. Once again, you’re bringing that information to the forefront, and you’re planting that seed of belonging. I think that was a great idea.”

Another participant added to that sentiment, highlighting what someone in her group shared around culture moments.

“Carving out time in every meeting, no matter how small or large or who is present, just a few minutes to discuss your DEI strategy, really aligns your entire company. It shows its importance and that it’s a part of the business, not a side project. Someone addressing why culture is important for the business shows that you have buy in from the top, and you’re able to share your message more broadly.”

The program, which includes interactive seminars, peer coaching and executive sponsorship, guides participants in developing detailed plans to lead meaningful changes within their companies. The group meets next on September 21, where the focus will be on Unconscious Bias.
