Council Leads Development of New Best Practices for API Surface Well Servicing

The Council is leading efforts to develop best practices for well servicing through the American Petroleum Institute’s Recommended Practice standards. The most recent API Recommended Practice 53 addressed Well Control Systems for Drilling Wells but didn’t provide guidelines for well servicing operations.

In July 2020, the Association for Energy Service Companies, which has since merged with PESA to form the Council, submitted a proposal to API to develop recommendations for surface well servicing pressure control equipment in a cased well using a well servicing rig. API approved the proposal and is forming a committee to write the first edition of the recommended practice.

More than 60 individuals volunteered to participate in the recommended practice committee, which will be co-chaired by Members Gary Olliff, Brigade Energy Services, and Ken Houston, Key Energy Services. Committee members include individuals from companies involved with well servicing, equipment manufacturing and maintenance, well control service and equipment providers, and operators.

The group began work with its inaugural meeting in March and a second meeting on April 14. It will continue monthly remote meetings to complete the recommended practice and submit it to the API approval process.

If you or your company are interested in participating in the committee or need additional information, please contact Council Vice President Kenny Jordan.
