One word followed me through every session, every dinner, every hallway conversation at CERAWeek this year.
Resilience.
I had to think about why it was resonating for me.
Germany’s energy minister stood on one of the biggest stages in energy and said: “If sustainability crashes your economy, you have to readjust.”
That matters. Germany moved faster than almost any country on the energy transition and paid a significant economic price for it. Hearing their minister publicly course-correct wasn’t abstract policy talk. It was a real-world case study in what happens when ideology outpaces practicality.
But that was one moment in a week full of them.
The bigger theme was simpler: the world keeps changing… demand, geopolitics, technology, supply, policy… and the energy industry keeps finding a way to adapt. The people building, operating and innovating inside this industry are doing it under conditions that shift constantly.
Resilience isn’t a personality trait – that’s in the energy services DNA.
Thank you Daniel Yergin for another remarkable CERAWeek. This one gave me a lot to think about.
