Shelby Halverson, Senior Account Director, Solaris Energy Infrastructure, is a graduate of the Energy Workforce Executive Leadership Program. She recently shared her insights on the energy services and technology sector.
Energy Workforce: What is your role with the company? What are your core responsibilities? What does a typical day look like?
SH: I am a Senior Account Director located in Midland, TX. My core responsibilities consist of engaging stakeholders, new and existing and managing the execution process..
EW: Why did you join the energy industry? Was there an individual who influenced your decision? Was there an event or piece of technology that got you excited?
SH: I am 3rd-generation in the oil & gas industry; growing up, I was always interested in what I would hear my dad talk about, from drilling rigs to cementing to completions. I found it all very interesting, and when it came time to pick a college and major, I knew I wanted to be in this amazing industry. After completing my Petroleum Engineering degree, I became very curious about and intrigued by Hydraulic Fracturing; the technology surrounding these operations is fascinating, and I love that it is constantly evolving as the industry continues to change.
EW: What was your impression of the industry beforehand and how has it evolved?
SH: I have always had a positive impression of the industry, having grown up around it. After joining the industry myself, I was reassured by how great the people actually are and how resilient it is, constantly evolving with the times.
EW: What has surprised you most about the industry?
SH: The people. Everyone in this industry is proud to work in oil & gas and very passionate about what they do. Not many industries have many people who share the same goals and passion for what they do. The community within the industry, for as big as this industry is, is very small.
EW: Where do you hope to see the industry develop over the next five years?
SH: I hope to see the industry continue to grow in the use of technology and AI. As these new aspects evolve, I hope the industry finds ways to drill and complete more efficiently.
EW: How has your involvement in Energy Workforce supported your career goals?
SH: Since getting involved in the Energy Workforce, I have expanded my network and confidence within the industry. The leadership programs offered by the workforce have helped me better understand how businesses succeed and how to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
EW: Who are one or two individuals you’ve met while working in the industry who have impacted your thinking?
SH: Throughout my years in the industry, I have been fortunate to meet many people at varying levels. I have had the pleasure of working with some great people who have been in the industry for a long time and have taught me to approach situations with honesty, positivity and confidence, along with always maintaining a curiosity to continue learning.
EW: What’s a technology or innovation you’ve seen in the sector that impressed you?
SH: Not a specific technology, but I have been impressed by how the industry thrives during downtimes and constantly innovates to do more with less. I am always impressed at how quickly companies can drill, complete and produce a well compared to 10 years ago.
EW: What advice would you give someone just getting started in the energy industry?
MB: Don’t be afraid to get out there and spend some time in the field. The core of this industry is in the field, and you will learn a lot of lifelong lessons about people and the basic operations of the industry. Having core knowledge of these operations will assist you in approaching situations as you grow in your career.
EW: What do you wish other people knew about oil and gas?
SH: This is a great industry; it deserves a lot more respect than it gets. This industry is full of very hardworking people and is what makes many aspects of modern life possible, not just the gasoline you put in your car. A great example of this is the power demand with all the new AI data centers.
EW: What do you do for fun or what’s your idea of a perfect vacation?
SH: I love to travel and spend time with my family.
EW: What’s a fun fact people would never guess about you?
SH: I am an avid hunter, I have traveled the world hunting big game.
