Participants recently gathered for the Leadership Forum with Advisory Board Member Jennifer Simons, Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary at Oceaneering.
Focusing on the theme of “Nontraditional Career Paths,” Simons shared her journey from law school to her current role, noting that “every one of those steps helped prepare [her] for the career [she] has today.”
Relating back to her own unique career background, Simons emphasized the nonlinear nature of nontraditional paths, noting that while some professional goals may align with the traditional career ladder, others are better suited to the ‘career jungle gym,’ with its constant shifts and moves.
“I don’t think the career jungle gym works for everyone, but if you’re open to different paths and opportunities, a nontraditional career path may be the right fit for you,” Simons said.
When going down a nontraditional path, there are certain risks and trade-offs you face while exploring career opportunities and options. Simons highlighted that a traditional career path can at times create a sense of false security, and that neither option is completely risk-free. The right path depends on personal goals and individual traits.
To close the forum, Simons led an exclusive Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to dig deeper into the topic, sparking up conversation on topics such as AI and its impact on the workplace, leadership styles, and the importance of leaning on your team.
Thank you for the Emerging Executives Committee Chair, Jordan West, Sales Representative, Mustang Cat, for kicking off the forum and delivering remarks.
