The Environmental Defense Center sued the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (“BSEE”) and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (“BOEM”) on December 3, 2014 alleging that the agencies violated the National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”) by authorizing HF and acidizing from offshore platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel without first completing an Environmental Impact Statement. DOI attorneys responded to the lawsuit in early February saying that the permits, although over 20 years old, adequately considered environmental impacts and incorporated public input.
