HOUSTON — Today, the Energy Workforce & Technology Council released its July 2026 jobs report, showing that energy services employment remained relatively stable even as the broader U.S. labor market weakened.
Energy services employment totaled 628,136 jobs in July, a decrease of 614 positions from June, according to preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and Energy Workforce analysis.
The modest monthly decline continues a broader trend of relative stability across the energy services workforce in 2026. Despite month-to-month fluctuations, employment has remained within a narrow range as companies continue to take a disciplined approach to hiring and align workforce levels with sustained customer demand.
The national labor market told a different story. According to the Labor Department, U.S. employers lost 23,000 jobs, significantly below economists’ expectations for a gain of around 83,000.
“Against a slowing national labor market, the energy services workforce continues to show relative stability,” said EWTC President Molly Determan. “While we will continue to see movement month to month, employment levels have remained steady despite continued economic uncertainty.”
Determan noted that service companies continue navigating uncertainty across commodity markets, trade, geopolitical conditions and the broader economy while remaining focused on long-term workforce needs.
“Energy services companies understand how important it is to maintain the skilled workforce necessary to respond when demand increases,” Determan said. “That balance between operational discipline and workforce readiness continues to shape hiring decisions across the sector.”
