PESA and Joint Trades Supporting DOI’s Development of New OCS Leasing Program

The Department of the Interior recently announced plans to begin work on a new five-year (2019-2024) National Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Program for the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The goal is to develop a leasing program that respects environmental and economic sensitivities while allowing for the responsible development of oil and natural gas resources.

As a first step in the two to three year process, per a July 3 Federal Register notice, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) opened a 45-day request for information period. BOEM requested information on the economic, social, and environmental values of all OCS resources, as well as the potential impact of oil and gas exploration and development on other OCS resources and the marine, coastal, and human environments. Comments must be submitted to BOEM by August 17, 2017.

PESA is working with other trade associations to educate key policymakers on the importance of a robust OCS leasing program, as well as the technological innovations driven by the oilfield service and supply sector to ensure operations are conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
