PESA Joins with Trade Group in Responding to BOEM’s GOM Draft Supplemental EIS

In comments submitted on Monday, May 15, PESA joined a Joint Trade effort to express concern to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) regarding its draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) OCS lease sale.  The Joint Trades took exception to BOEM including in the SEIS “new, substantive, yet incomplete information” from the ongoing GOM Air Quality Modeling Study. Of additional concern, BOEM is using the preliminary study results to make National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental impact determinations.

Use of the incomplete, ongoing study does not present an accurate depiction of offshore operations to the public and stakeholders. The Joint Trades recommended that the unfinished study not be used to draw conclusions regarding potential impacts to onshore air quality.

On May 15, BOEM provided a 30-day extension to the comment period. The Joint Trade group, which is being led by the American Petroleum Institute, will continue to review the draft SEIS and submit additional comments if deemed warranted.

If you have any questions, please contact PESA Sr. Director of Public Policy, Jean Gould.
