EWTC Kicks Off First Operations Level Leadership Program in Louisiana

Participants gathered at Superior Energy’s HB Rentals facility in Broussard, Louisiana, last week for the year’s second Operations Level Leadership Training. The program, facilitated by Heidrick & Struggles, is a two-day seminar designed to transform managers from individual contributors into effective leaders. Attendees learned about tools, resources and strategies to help develop and refine leadership skills within their roles.

Over the two days, participants learned about their leadership styles and how to be situationally agile, explored their shadow of leadership, named their passions in order to identify what energizes them and focused on the importance of self-awareness and empathy.

The session was sponsored by Strategic Partners Chevron, Patterson-UTI and SLB.

Deidre Toups, Division President of Stabil Drill, Superior Energy and Energy Workforce Louisiana Chapter Chair, welcomed the group on the first day.

During the program kick-off, the facilitators surveyed the group, asking what they would most like to get out of the program. Common themes were, building better communication within teams, learning how to manage different personalities and how to minimize micromanaging and better delegate among teams.

After taking a personality assessment in advance of the program, the participants were able to dig down into understanding their own personalities as well as understand other’s personality traits. The facilitators walked the group through behavioral style quadrants to help them gain a better understanding of how and why individuals behave on a good day versus a bad day and how to manage through that.

Facilitators Doug Orr and Laura Gironda also introduced the importance of values, not only within your organization but personally as well. The participants learned how identifying and truly knowing their values and personal purpose can help them as managers in several ways such as making better decisions, setting clear priorities and driving team performance.

“Being in touch with your purpose is the most important thing. My purpose is to inspire people every day through courage, wisdom and leadership.”

-Deidre Toups

During the seminar, participants were given the opportunity to break out into groups to participate in exercises which gave the group opportunities to collaborate, problem solve, build trust and network.

The program wrapped up with group discussions and coaching. Participant takeaways included recognizing the significance of getting and giving valuable feedback, the usefulness of understanding roles within a team and what exactly leadership means.

“I have learned that leadership is less about how it impacts me and more about how it affects others.”

-Program Participant

Deidre Toups commented on the program, stating “The EWTC Operations Leadership course brought managers and supervisors from various service organizations in Louisiana together to learn powerful skills on how to transform from managing tasks to leading people.  The training has brought awareness of the significant impact leadership can have not only with their employees and within their organizations but extends to our communities as well.  It’s exciting to see each participant leave with a greater capacity and a renewed passion to drive positive change in their roles as leaders.”

Registration is open for the November 20-21 Operations Level Leadership Program hosted in Houston. For more information about Energy Workforce training programs, contact Vice President Programs & Events Peggy Helfert.
