Front-Line Leaders Attend Leadership Course at Diamondback Energy

Last week, participants gathered at Diamondback Energy in Midland for this year’s final iteration of the Field Level Leadership Program. Attendees learned about tools, resources and strategies to help develop and refine leadership skills within their roles. The program, facilitated by Doug Orr, Partner, Heidrick & Struggles, is a two-day seminar designed to transform managers from individual contributors into effective leaders.

More than 25 participants from Alkane Midstream, Diamondback Energy, FlexPipe, Kodiak Gas Services, Mattr and ProPetro spent the two days honing in on identifying leadership styles, how to be situationally agile, exploring their shadow of leadership, engagement and trust, and naming their passions to identify what energizes them.

The session was sponsored by Strategic Partners Chevron, Patterson-UTI and SLB.

The program began with a discussion on management versus leadership, followed by reflections on leadership impact.

After taking a personality assessment in advance of the program, the participants were able to dig down into understanding their personalities as well as understand other’s personality traits. One participant noted this self-discovery tool’s value during the session. “This really has opened my eyes, showing me there can be pros and cons to each style. It has also made me think about what I want people on my team to know about me.”

During the seminar, participants were given the opportunity to break out into groups to participate in an exercise to explore self-awareness and emotional intelligence. The breakout was a chance for the group to select competencies that are most relevant to their current roles and aspirations and then reflect on what drives great leadership.

“I’ve realized that I need to be more intentional about what I say and, even more so, how I say it.”

The group also explored personal purpose, reflecting on values and what drives their impact. An activity allowed attendees to share what energizes them, the impact these concepts have on others, and how this is transferable at work. Participants shared powerful messages about their purpose, showing them they can be breakthrough leaders.

The program wrapped with the group exploring what drives trust, active listening, and effective feedback. When asked about key takeaways, participants noted the power of being intentional every day and the importance of self-awareness. One participant shared, “I am now realizing that how you show up every day relies on how you feel and what you are dealing with.”
