The Energy Workforce Environmental Policy Committee meeting, led by John Candler, SLB, recently submitted industry comments to the Environmental Protection Agency on their 1,4-Dioxane Supplemental Risk Evaluation urging the agency to reconsider their prior risk determination and evaluation.
The comments argue EPA should reconsider the Risk Evaluation Supplement and the Risk Determination because it did not take into consideration the fact that hydraulic fracturing operators utilize engineering and work practice controls, and their workers wear OSHA-required personal protective equipment (PPE). The hydraulic fracturing scenario employed and EPA’s modeling of occupational exposures in hydraulic fracturing based on that scenario involved assumptions that are incorrect and that led to misleading results.
With the final risk determination publication it is expected that EPA could move forward in developing a proposed rule under TSCA section 6. By submitting these industry comments to EPA, Energy Workforce seeks to have the agency reconsider the risks with the additional information on PPE and scenarios.
