Making the Case for Energy: EWTC Leads WGLC Discussion on Advocacy

The energy industry’s ability to deliver depends in part on how effectively its people explain the value of their work. Connecting reliable, affordable energy to the infrastructure, investment and workforce required to produce it was a central theme of a fireside chat led by EWTC President Molly Determan at the Women’s Global Leadership Conference in Houston on October 28.

Joined by Jaimie Harding, Vice President of Communications at TC Energy, Determan explored advocacy as a practical leadership responsibility: making the case for the industry, advancing business priorities and earning the credibility to influence decisions.

The discussion examined TC Energy’s employee advocacy program and the role employees can play in building public understanding of energy. People throughout the business bring firsthand knowledge of the work that supports energy reliability and economic growth. Helping them stay informed and communicate that connection gives the industry a stronger voice.

The conversation also addressed how leaders earn influence within their organizations. Technical skills can get someone into the room, but trust and credibility keep them at the table. Listening, speaking clearly, following through and accepting difficult feedback all contribute to that credibility. When advocating for a team or a new initiative, understanding the company’s mission and connecting the request to business priorities strengthens the case.

The fireside chat reinforced a shared responsibility across the industry: know the business, deliver on commitments and be prepared to explain why the work matters.
