ESG Committee Holds Annual Year-End Capstone

Marie Caekebeke, Wendy King, Castlen Kennedy

The ESG Committee, in partnership with the Energy Technology, I&D Engagement and HSE committees, held its annual capstone seminar at OneSubsea on October 3.

The seminar provided an opportunity for committee members to discuss ESG lessons learned in 2022 and engage in best practice sharing as they prepare for the coming year. Speakers included representatives from Abernathy MacGregor, Apache, Chord Energy, ConocoPhillips, Energie Row, Leader’s Edge Consulting, Oil States International, Ranger Energy Services, Piper Sandler, TechnipFMC and Vallourec. Committee Chair Marie Caekebeke, Baker Hughes, and Vice Chair Yvonne Fletcher, Solaris Oilfield Infrastructure, facilitated the discussions. Anthony Thomas, Piper Sandler. gave the market outlook focusing on the macro ESG landscape.

Operator ESG Strategies

For companies looking to adjust their ESG strategy in 2023, hearing directly from their customers is an important input to that process. Castlen Kennedy, Apache, and Wendy King, ConocoPhillips, emphasized the importance of service providers engaging with their customers on operator ESG strategies.

This allows providers to tie their technology solutions to their customer’s priorities and the narrative operators are trying to communicate to their stakeholders. The panelists noted how compensation is tied to ESG metrics and how frequently their teams are discussing emissions. Companies that do not engage with these ESG strategy priorities might miss opportunities to be the supplier of choice.

Case Study: Car Idling – Oil States International

Gary Childress

HSE Committee Chair Gary Childress, Oil States International, focused on one of the components contributing to their emissions, costs and HSE metrics: car idling. Childress reviewed how their team compiled the data, looked at a slate of solutions, how they rolled out implementation and the results achieved. This very specific example provided gave the audience insights as to how companies can focus on a couple of issues to drive improvements across each of the E, S and G dimensions.

Governance: Why and How?

Marie Caekebeke, Samantha Holroyd, Melissa Cougle, Sydney Issacs, Yvonne Fletcher

Advisory Board Member Melissa Cougle, Ranger Energy Services, led a dialogue with Samantha Holroyd, Chord Energy, and Sydney Issacs, Abernathy MacGregor, on why governance should be the pillar upon which companies’ business and sustainability strategies should build on. The panelists focused on how conducting business properly is the right thing to do to run a business and also a way to retain and recruit investors. Another key message when thinking about how companies are set up, how they regulate themselves and set their governance is to ensure it is always “fit for purpose.”

Intersection of DEI and “S” Dimension

I&D Engagement Committee members Lamonica Spivey, TechnipFMC, Shanta Eadon, Leader’s Edge Consulting, and Mariana Rodrigues, Vallourec, along with Felix Akompi from Energie Row, closed the seminar with a lively discussion on the impact of diversity, equity and inclusion in energy services. They shared personal perspectives of approaches to engaging leadership teams, employees and potential recruits. Practical tips included finding resources that already exist in the form of videos, books, worksheets and resources from Energy Workforce, as well as finding ways to integrate these as training materials. A key theme on the topic of DEI was “to meet people where they are” to see impacts.
