DOE Invests $352 Million in Energy Frontier Research Centers

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $352 million funding opportunity for its Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRC) program to support foundational research that advances next-generation energy technologies and strengthens U.S. scientific and technological leadership.

The EFRC program brings together researchers from universities, DOE National Laboratories, nonprofits, and private companies to conduct basic research in areas such as materials science, chemistry, geosciences, and biosciences. Priority topics include unconventional computing, artificial intelligence for materials and chemistry, critical minerals, nuclear energy science, energy storage, advanced manufacturing, microelectronics, subsurface science, and quantum systems.

Since its launch in 2009, the program has supported 107 centers across more than 190 institutions, trained over 6,200 students and postdoctoral researchers, and produced thousands of publications, patents, and startup companies.
