On December 1, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office released a report outlining 66 actions for state agencies to undertake in order to make the transport of crude oil by rail or water safer and improve emergency preparedness and response. Actions taken so far include, performing rail safety inspections, preparing first responders, updating and enhancing response plans and urging the oil and rail industries to increase the safety of shipments. The governor’s office has called upon the federal government to implement additional rules to improve the safety of crude oil transport.
