On November 24, the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission released a draft report which examines natural gas waste disposal pits near contaminated groundwater within the Pavillion Field in Fremont County. The report offered no firm conclusions, but did outline steps for the field’s operator, Encana Corp., to undertake in order to determine if the disposal pits are indeed sources of contamination. According to the Casper Star-Tribune, there is no consensus regarding why Pavillion’s drinking water is contaminated with some believing the contamination may be naturally occurring due to deep water wells. Public comment on the draft is open until January 16.
