New York Formalizes Ban on Fracking

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation on Monday officially banned high-volume hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in the state despite the EPA’s multi-year study on hydraulic fracturing concluded that the extraction process has “not led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water resources,” nor did the decade-long spread of fracking cause extensive damage to groundwater resources.

“New York continues to choose politics over proven science in the formalization of this ban. They are not only ignoring well-documented benefits that include significant job creation, lowered energy prices and greater geopolitical strength, they’re also refusing to acknowledge the scientific evidence that demonstrates hydraulic fracturing can work in conjunction with environmental protection,” said PESA President Leslie Beyer.

The administration of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) filed its 43-page findings statement for the ban Monday, saying fracking is too harmful to the environment and public health to be allowed.

Cuomo approved the ban in December, seven years after the state first put a moratorium on the practice.

New York is the only state with significant natural gas resources to ban fracking, which has allowed other states to tap huge volumes of gas trapped in shale formations deep underground. The technology has produced new jobs, created economic growth and reduced energy prices
