On November 5, Mark Fox was sworn in as chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation. The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation produces a third of North Dakota’s total oil output at more than 330,000 barrels of oil per day. Tribal members have expressed hope that Fox will resolve issues related to revenue mismanagement and will halt further drilling development if environmental assurances are not provided. Lynn Helms, Director of North Dakota’s Department of Mineral Resources, said that Fox is regarded as “less friendly” to the oil industry than his predecessor.
