President Biden May Address Energy Prices During Saudi Arabia Trip

This week, President Biden travels to Saudi Arabia to meet with Saudi leaders and participate in regional meetings to discuss a wide range of topics from security and trade relations to the pressing energy issues the world currently faces. This trip comes at a time when energy prices around the world are reaching new highs, and supply issues are increasingly becoming a global issue.

During his time in Saudi Arabia, President Biden will participate in a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which will include representatives from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan and Egypt. Additionally, it is expected that President Biden will meet with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman in a bilateral meeting where oil and gas issues are sure to be a topic of conversation.

President Biden outlined his message to Saudi Arabia in an op-ed penned last weekend. He explained his time in the kingdom would be spent discussing a wide range of issues, such as the ongoing conflict with Yemen, human rights issues and regional security matters. His message for the Saudis in regards to energy supply was relatively downplayed, as no direct appeal for increased production was outlined.  While the purpose of the trip was set to a wide range of topics, energy production will likely be the elephant in the room of every meeting.
