What has surprised you most about working in the energy industry?
What assumptions did you have before your internship? What have you learned so far? What would your friends, classmates, or family members be surprised to know about the industry?
Joining BEUSA this summer has taught me so much about the energy industry that I was so unaware of. I have always been interested in the energy industry because it is the main driver of most other industries, but working in it has shown me how much goes into producing energy. I was very surprised by how much influence automation and controls have in hydraulic fracturing. During my internship, I saw how integrated controls and automation were in everything. A lot of work goes into automating processes to improve efficiency and safety, which I was not very aware of since it is not often discussed. It was super interesting getting to see how much data is actually used in energy production. Basically, every team within BEUSA had a high demand for data to use in their various projects, which is awesome to see. While I did learn a lot about BEUSA as a company, I also learned so much about what it takes to be a successful engineer in the energy industry
What attracted you to this internship opportunity?
I have always been interested in the energy sector and technology, so BEUSA seemed like a perfect fit. Their mix of highly innovative technologies, groundbreaking discoveries, and new methods for efficiency really drove my interest in this internship. Their drive for innovation and automation really lines up with what I like to do.
What’s one thing you wish more people understood about the energy industry?
I wish people understood how complicated a lot of these processes are. I think a lot of people are generally unaware of what happens in energy production, so they make assumptions that are not always true.
If you could ask an industry leader one question, what would it be?
I would like to ask them how big of a role will ML/AI have in the future of oil production and in what ways that can be implemented.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I am hopefully working in the controls space while taking classes for a master’s program.
