Energy Technology Committee Hosts Natural Gas Market Outlook

This week, the Energy Technology Committee hosted Emily McClain, VP LNG, Rystad, for a closed-door macro market outlook focused on international natural gas. The discussion focused on market trends, supply and demand across different regions and the impact of recent geopolitical events on energy trade.

The committee, chaired by Jack Nassab, DNOW, is a forum for discussion around energy technology, best practices, innovation, and sustainability. It includes representatives from 20 different Energy Workforce member companies. With this mission in mind, the committee sought the outlook to provide additional context on how gas markets, in the short, medium and long term, may impact energy services and the wider energy markets.

McClain’s presentation and discussion covered future projections for LNG exports, potential supply gluts, and the role of emerging markets in shaping the energy landscape. She opened with a historical context of the market, spent time on the current regional outlooks, and then showed how Rystad is looking to the future of markets past 2030.

Emily’s analysis of North America, particularly the US, was of importance to the sector, which has a significant role in LNG exports. However, the U.S. is limited by the lack of infrastructure, particularly in the Northeast, where Energy Workforce continuously advocates for comprehensive permitting reform to reduce bottlenecks. She emphasized the importance of building out LNG infrastructure to support long-term demand. With the LNG ‘pause’ lifted by the Trump administration, the industry is bullish, and there are dozens of announced projects, but she cautioned that only a handful are expected to move forward.
