Participants gathered at NOV last week for the year’s first Operations Level Leadership Training. The program, facilitated by Heidrick & Struggles, is a two-day seminar designed to transform managers from individual contributors into effective leaders. Attendees learned about tools, resources and strategies to help develop and refine leadership skills within their roles.
Over the two days, participants learned about their leadership styles and how to be situationally agile, explored their shadow of leadership, named their passions to identify what energizes them and focused on the importance of self-awareness and empathy.

Scott Livingston, President, Energy Products and Services, NOV and EWTC Board Chair, spoke to the group on the first day, addressing the importance of investing in future leaders within an organization. He gave examples of his own experiences not only as a leader but also the way he communicates with Leadership above him to get them vital information.
Renju Jose Kuruvila, President, M/D Totco & IntelliServ, NOV addressed the group on day two, speaking to Empowering People and Leadership, trusting in your team and empowering them to make tough decisions or take on difficult projects that drive their growth.
During the program kick-off, the facilitators surveyed the group, asking what they would like to get out of the program. Common themes were building better communication within teams, learning how to manage different personalities, minimizing micromanaging, and better delegating among teams.
After taking a personality assessment in advance of the program, the participants were able to dig down into understanding their personalities as well as understand other’s personality traits. The facilitators walked the group through behavioral style quadrants to help them better understand how and why individuals behave on a good versus a bad day and how to manage that.
Facilitators Doug Orr and Laura Gironda also introduced the importance of values, not only within your organization but personally as well. The participants learned how identifying and truly knowing their values and personal purpose can help them as managers in several ways, such as making better decisions, setting clear priorities and driving team performance.
During the seminar, participants were allowed to break out into groups to participate in exercises, which allowed the group to collaborate, problem solve, build trust and network.
The program wrapped up with group discussions and coaching. Participant takeaways included recognizing the importance of culture in the organization, the significance of getting and giving valuable feedback, and the usefulness of understanding roles within a team.
