At an event held at the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s offices, a panel of energy officials discussed whether local municipalities could exert control over oil and gas operations in their cities. Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources, Molly Ward noted that state agencies regulate fracking, but further elaborated that municipalities need to establish parameters on operations within local areas. Greg Buppert, a senior attorney in the Virginia office of the Southern Environmental Law Center urged local entities to begin exerting control by establishing setbacks and restrictions to limit drilling activities in certain areas.
