Energy Workforce and SEVA Host Policy Briefing on New Administration

With the current Administration’s rapid pace of energy-related policy, Energy Workforce alongside Sustainability and Energy Value Advisors (SEVA) hosted an hour-long informative policy briefing focused on potential tariff implications and the future of the IRA.

Moderated by President Tim Tarpley, the session featured David Planning, Cornerstone Government Affairs who covered tariffs, Dr. Jay Golden, Syracuse University who discussed the IRA, and Jack Belcher, Cornerstone Government Affairs.

Although the conversation was held before tariff executive orders were announced on February 1, and then, in the case of Mexico and Canada, postponed 30 days, Planning made several key points. He pointed to how the President sees tariffs as a tool for negotiation as demonstrated during his first term. After the announcement of 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico plus 10% on China on February 1, there were phone calls between leaders resulting in a 30-day delay of the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

During the call, Planning advised companies in the sector to prepare for potential impacts to business, assume there will be no exceptions and continue to deliver messages that align with the President’s goal of American energy dominance.

Golden discussed how there could be the potential for removal of certain tax credits in the IRA but that there are also opportunities for regulatory reform and permitting process improvements that could benefit the sector. It is important during this process that the sector and wider industry share feedback and data to support Congress and the Administration as it reviews current legislation and develops new policies.
