Rep. Fletcher Supports “All of the Above” Energy Policy During Council Roundtable

Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX-07), Advisory Board Member and Government Affairs Committee Chair, Todd Ennenga, Halliburton, and Tim Tarpley, Energy Workforce & Technology Council

The Council hosted a virtual policy roundtable on Monday with Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX-07) hosted by Advisory Board Member and Government Affairs Committee Chair, Todd Ennenga, Halliburton, and Tim Tarpley, SVP Government Affairs for the Council.

Rep. Fletcher highlighted the importance of the energy industry’s perspective in the conversation about a cleaner and more reliable energy future. She discussed the industry’s role in research and development, and its commitment to innovation and finding solutions for national and global energy challenges.

“I worry there are people who want to exclude those who work in the energy industry now from talking about what our energy future looks like,” Rep. Fletcher said. “These are precisely the people that we need. The scientists, geologists, the innovators, the risk takers, the people who have novel ideas about how to do things better, or how to do things differently. Basically, the people in this organization, and in similar groups throughout the industry.”

Rep. Fletcher discussed how the federal government could strengthen the energy industry’s efforts to develop new technologies. She said support from the Department of Energy’s National Labs could bring some of the new technologies to scale, and incentives like the 45q tax credit would continue to bolster investments in these new innovations.

Rep. Fletcher reiterated her opposition to the Department of Interior’s moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal land, and said she would continue pushing the Biden Administration to approach the issue in a different way. She highlighted the importance of a robust domestic energy industry and the far-reaching impacts of industry growth and standards.

“I think it’s really important to focus on why we need and want domestic energy production,” Rep. Fletcher said. “Domestic energy production results in lower emissions and foreign imports. And it funds some of the critical environmental programs that we rely on like the Land and Water Conservation Fund. We know that we produce it better, that we have stricter environmental standards, that we have better worker safety standards.”

Rep. Fletcher called for a holistic approach to energy policy, an “all of the above” strategy for energy investment, and a balanced approach to industry regulation.
